Each month, we select an image from IXXI's collection and tell you more about it. Simply because it's an image that appeals to lots of people, or because it's particularly beautiful, or because it has a story that everyone would like to know. This month, it's The Hummingbirds from the Victoria & Albert Museum. This colourful illustration brings a smile to everyone's face!
The German zoologist and philosopher Ernst Haeckel was so inspired by the natural world that he decided to put his career aside to devote himself to recording it in the form of illustrations. Haeckel didn't just have a great brain; he had a great creative talent. We can see this in his colourful artwork, The Hummingbirds, which displays the precision and eye for detail that makes his work so appealing.
The Hummingbirds, drawn circa 1900, is plate number 99 from his book of prints Kunstformen der Natur (or: Art Forms in Nature). Just like the other illustrations in the series, the image is busy and detailed. Haeckel has given the tiny, fluttering creatures a touch of theatrical flair in this well-organised composition. Many types of Trochilidae, the Latin name for hummingbirds, come from central and South America and he has collected them here in this colourful work. His brilliant palette immediately transports us to a vibrant animal kingdom.
Molecular genetic research has shown that there are nine main groups of hummingbirds under which many different types fall. Haeckel has incorporated the twelve most diverse varieties into this print. Fun fact: Did you know that the hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world? These colourful little flitabouts can fly backwards as well as forwards by rotating their wings in a circular motion.
Haeckel's images were very popular at the start of the 20th century, just as the Art Deco style was becoming fashionable. He made over 130 illustrations in his career, some of which are on display in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. If London is a bit too far, we have the images in our collection too. See them here now. Decorating a wall with The Hummingbirds will instantly cheer up any room.
