There are so many stories to be told about IXXI's image collection. And we love telling them! This time, we're taking you back to the year 1690. The year that the planet Uranus was seen for the first time, the musical instrument the clarinet was invented, and the creation of the masterpiece 'The Menagerie', painted by the artist Melchior d'Hondecoeter. let us tell you more about this masterpiece.
On the canvas are white sulphur-crested cockatoos from Australia, squirrel monkeys from Central America, a red-tailed grey parrot from Africa and a Purple-naped lory from Indonesia. D'Hondecoeter brought these animals together in this artwork especially for the Dutch William III. The canvas was intended to be hung above the door of the king's private apartment in Paleis Het Loo. After the death of William III, the painting became the property of the Rijksmuseum.
A menagerie, from which this artwork takes its name, is a collection of wild and exotic animals kept in captivity. The were the forerunners of modern zoos. Capturing animals on canvas is Melchior d’ Hondecoeter's speciality. The painter, who was born in Utrecht, was destined to become an artist. Both his father and his grandfather were painters. His grandfather mainly focused on painting forest landscapes with animals. His father concentrated on painting the animals themselves. Melchior distinguished himself by placing the animals in the foreground and creating depth in his paintings.
