Every month we relate the story behind an image from the IXXI collection. That is simply because this image appeals, is exceptionally beautiful or the image has a remarkable story. This time we transport you to the story behind the photo of the Västerbotten Tree by the Rotterdam photographer Claire Droppert. An image that radiates tranquillity. But where is the Västerbotten actually located? And how did Claire wind up there?
Västerbotten is located in Sweden, to be precise at the south part of the Swedish Lapland. It belongs to the province of Västerbottens län, which is 15,093 km² and has around 200,000 inhabitants. Just for comparison: The region of Greater London is 1,569 km² and has around 8,674,000 inhabitants. Just a small difference ;)
In addition to the well-known Västerbotten cheese (yummy!), the region is famous for its unspoilt nature, rugged coast and kilometres of no-man’s land. In short, a perfect area for Claire to shoot a series of beautiful photos.
Midsummer night sun
In June 2017, Claire travelled to his magical province. During the winter months, this region gets only a few hours of daylight, but it is just the opposite in the summer. In June, the sun shines for about 20 hours per day. “As a photographer, I think this is perfect place to capture the brightness of the midnight sun and watch the perfect magic light shining over the many scenic landscapes Västerbotten has to offer,” says Claire.
Silence is golden
Typical for this serene area is that you can travel far and wide without encountering a soul. This is therefore also the ideal backdrop for Clair’s photo series Silence. She is well-known for combining simplicity and minimalism in order to instil a serene style in her photographs. This is clearly recognisable in her soothing photo Västerbotten Tree, shot near a tranquil lake in Gransjön. A wonderful place to relax.
You don’t have a trip to Sweden on your schedule? No problem! With IXXI Original, you can install a beautiful image of Västerbotten in your favourite wall decoration. That will bring instant serenity into your home.
